Root Canals Save Teeth

Root Canals Save Teeth!

May is Save Your Tooth Month

Root canals don’t hurt, they actually relieve the pain.

When your teeth show signs of infection or disease following a dental exam, your dentist may recommend root canal treatment – or refer you to an Endodontist.

But that’s not bad news, because root canals save teeth. A root canal is generally considered a healthier alternative to extracting the infected or diseased tooth.

While not very common, even kids get root canals.

When your natural teeth are removed, jaw bone loss will result if not replaced by a dental implant.

According to Dr. Karl Maloney, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in Branchburg, NJ:

“Your teeth affect your whole body. When they’re healthy, you’re healthier too. A missing tooth can affect your bite, speech and eating choices. As you rely more on your remaining teeth, you increase the chance they will wear out prematurely, or be damaged or lost.”

Dental implants are considered the healthiest option because they are permanent and mimic your natural tooth roots.

Implants act just like your natural teeth. They safeguard and preserve your bone structure, oral health and appearance.

And don’t forget about the cost of root canal treatment – which is usually covered at least in part by your dental insurance – compared to tooth extraction and the resulting tooth replacement option.

It might sound better to get your tooth pulled, especially if it’s not one that’s very visible, but missing teeth not only negatively impact your dental health & overall health, your quality of life and self-esteem could take a hit too.

Dr. Maloney goes on to say,

“Who would want their appearance and health to deteriorate? That’s the natural consequence of missing teeth – the jaw literally melts away. Generally, people will lose 25% of their supporting jawbone structure within the first year after tooth loss.”

Judging from those facts, the preferable option from both a health and financial perspective would seem to be, save your tooth at all costs.
